L'interazione non lineare tra la doppia modalità di lacerazione (DTM) e le instabilità Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) con diversi profili di flusso di taglio è stata studiata numericamente tramite l'uso di un modello magnetoidrodinamico comprimibile (MHD). Ci concentreremo sulle instabilità del KH nei plasmi a taglio magnetico debole e invertito con un forte effetto stabilizzante della flessione della linea di campo. I risultati mostrano che in questi plasmi si verificano instabilità KH accoppiate con DTM e la modalità KH domina la dinamica dell'instabilità, suggerendo il ruolo cruciale del debole taglio magnetico nella formazione di armoniche di alta modalità. Per i flussi simmetrici, durante la fase di crescita viene mantenuta una configurazione asimmetrica di riconnessione magnetica forzata, che porta all'interblocco delle modalità. Inoltre, questa indagine sull'interazione di instabilità DTM-KH contribuisce alla nostra comprensione del meccanismo di riconnessione non lineare nel regime dei plasmi di taglio magnetico debole e invertito, che è rilevante per gli studi astrofisici e di fusione.
Le instabilità guidate dal flusso del plasma svolgono un ruolo importante nei plasmi magnetizzati, tra cui la corona solare, i getti magnetosferici e astrofisici1,2,3,4,5,6,7. È noto che la rotazione del plasma eccita o sopprime molte instabilità magnetoidrodinamiche (MHD)8,9. Sia studi analitici che numerici hanno dimostrato che i flussi di taglio a velocità inferiore ad Alfven possono stabilizzare le modalità di lacerazione in sistemi comprendenti superfici risonanti periodiche singole o multiple10,11,12. Quando la variazione di velocità dei flussi di taglio supera un valore di soglia2, appare una nuova varietà di modalità instabile, l'instabilità di Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH)3,4,13; il tasso di crescita di questa instabilità è maggiore delle modalità di lacerazione14,15,16,17,18,19,20. È stato scoperto che le instabilità del KH sono alla base di vari fenomeni osservati in molti campi, tra cui la fisica magnetosferica5,6, l'astrofisica21,22, i plasmi polverosi23 e la fisica della fusione24,25,26.
Risultati precedenti hanno dimostrato che nelle instabilità KH le linee del campo magnetico e le linee del campo di flusso sono quasi parallele tra loro e che il foglio neutro e la topologia magnetica assumono una forma ondulatoria14,15,16,17,18,19,20. Negli esperimenti, l'instabilità del KH è stata studiata come possibile spiegazione delle asimmetrie poloidali delle fluttuazioni di densità che si invertono con la direzione della corrente plasmatica. È stato dimostrato che questi modi sono localizzati attorno a posizioni dove il gradiente radiale della velocità parallela assume un valore massimo27. Si prevede che forti flussi di plasma tagliati possano rendere instabili le oscillazioni del KH nei plasmi tokamak sferici28. Per piccoli spessori del flusso di taglio, l'instabilità KH è eccitata; al contrario, per spessori sufficientemente elevati, l'instabilità lacerabile sarà dominante29. Il codice di trasporto prevede che la rotazione toroidale nel tokamak possa raggiungere la velocità del suono ionico30. A flussi di taglio così grandi, devono essere considerate le instabilità magnetiche del KH28. Nella teoria della fusione e nella ricerca sperimentale, si possono trovare alcune indagini, ad esempio, sulle instabilità di tipo KH nei plasmi tokamak27,31,32,33.
Il tasso di crescita lineare dei modi KH aumenta con l'aumentare della forza dei flussi di taglio in un sistema con un'unica superficie risonante. Se il taglio magnetico è sufficientemente grande, la modalità di lacerazione mostrerà un forte accoppiamento con le instabilità KH e formerà un nuovo tipo di instabilità resistiva guidata dalle instabilità KH19,34. Per un sistema con due superfici risonanti, la modalità a doppio strappo (DTM) con un forte taglio magnetico, l'effetto combinato della stabilizzazione del periodo 'in fase' e della destabilizzazione del periodo 'fuori fase' porta a soppressione delle isole, ed entra persino nei processi di incastro e saturazione delle doppie isole nella fase non lineare35,36,37,38,39,40,41,42. Tuttavia, quando i flussi di taglio sono forti e hanno velocità vicine o maggiori della velocità locale di Alfven, la crescita dell’instabilità resistiva antisimmetrica è ulteriormente aumentata19. In tal caso, attraverso il processo di riconnessione sulle doppie superfici risonanti, i DTM possono interagire tra loro e anche accoppiarsi con le instabilità KH43.
